XM vs. Sirius Satellite Radio: What is the best for you?
You've probably heard of the two satellite radio companies, Sirius and XM Satellite Radio Radio, but you may not know much about them, such as the cost of each radio or what talent is available on each. Many people are tired of listening to regular AM and FM stations for several reasons. Perhaps they are tired of being bombarded with advertisements. Perhaps they do not like programming available. On the other hand, it may simply be that they are in a rural area and tired of losing their radio signal all the time. Whatever the reason, many consumers are turning to satellite radio as a viable alternative to regular radio stations.
The two companies are able to offer static free radio due to satellites. XM (based in Washington, DC) has two and Sirius (based in New York) has three satellites across the United States. Both companies offer users commercial free radio. Sirius offers over 125 channels of XM offers 160 different channels. There are channels for genres of music including jazz, folk, country and pop for diehard fans. An interesting feature of satellite radio is you can see the name of the artist playing and the title of song. So you never have to spend time just wondering who sang that song you just heard! There are also channels for weather and local traffic, sports, comedy, women's issues, talk shows, even old-time radio. Soon you may be able to watch the video and hear sound from your satellite radio.
There are also celebrity shows for both satellite radio companies. Martha Stewart recently signed an agreement to launch a radio channel 24 hours on Sirius Satellite Radio. And most everyone has heard that Howard Stern on Sirius is – uncensored. Having been in trouble with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for his radio show, he decided to go in the airways uncensored satellite radio. Since her show began, the number of Sirius subscribers increased by at least 2.7 million. If satellite radio want to hear and National Public Radio (NPR), you need to subscribe because they are the one offering NPR. But XM is not to be outdone by Sirius. XM signed Snoop Doggy Dog, but cooperation is the size of Oprah. In September 2006, users can tune into XM Oprah & Friends. The new channel will emissions Oprah Winfrey Show, O, The Oprah Magazine, and programming on fitness, health and self-improvement.
All this sounds good, but what you really need to be able to receive satellite radio? You'll need a Sirius or XM radio. This does not necessarily be a radio only for use in your car either. There are also home radios available today and there are even radios that you can use both at home and in your car. The price for a radio base offered by SIRIUS and XM is as low as $ 49.99. You will also subscribe to a service. SIRIUS and XM charge $ 12.95 per month for you to receive satellite signals on your radio. However, if you have several cars with radios satellite, you can save by choosing the family plan available from both companies.
Just how popular is satellite radio becomes? In March 2005, Hyundai announced that it would be the first automaker to put satellite radios in all its models sold in the United States. Each Hyundai including the popular Sonata, Santa Fe and Elantra models will be equipped with XM Satellite Radio. When this was announced, shares of the company mother of XM rose more than 8 percent. Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz also announced in March 2005 that Sirius radios would be a dealer-installed option on some of their models.
While satellite radio should you choose? That depends on you. You should check the stations available by visiting each business on the web before making a decision. Both radios offer comparable prices, it really comes down to what you want to hear. Are you a fan of Stern? Then you have to go with Sirius. But if you like Oprah, you may not hear on XM. Whichever you choose, you'll probably be very satisfied services and the receipt of satellite radio.
