Optical Zoom

Optical Zoom
How do I know how much optical zoom of a camera is equal to?

If a 28mm to 112mm zoom in 35mm photography, Regarding a digital camera, optical zoom what does that equal?

Some point-and-shoots have both their actual length intervention and 35mm equivalent printed on the front of the lens. In my experience the equivalent of 35mm of most point-and-shoot is around 15mm. This means that the 28-112mm lens on a film camera would see the same thing as a point-and-shoot 2x zoom, all the way up a point-and-shoot 7.5x zoom.
