What is the CCD in a digital camera?

CCD (abbreviation for Charge Coupled Device) camera is the optical sensor, which is the component that can transform the image of the target power and a video signal.
This is a relatively recent invention (Boyle and Smith 1970) which has revolutionized the world of television cameras from bulky equipment and expensive consumer products more compact and economically.

How does a CCD the black and white?
A camera has a lens that is capable of receiving external light and recreate an image inverted at its focal point. At this stage, it is classified in the CCD.

It is composed of hundreds of thousands of microscopic units called pixels arranged in a precise grid gives everyone a coordinated vertical and horizontal.
Each pixel is able to react to the light that is to store a certain electric charge.
The burden of various pixel is read continuously (with a variable frequency adjusted the simple electronic form) of signal processing circuit, which is constantly aware of the amount of light that hit different pixels and is capable of this

How does a CCD work on color?
In the case of color CCD camera, the thing is a bit complicated
For a color image is not enough just an indication of the amount of light hitting the CCD, but also that of its color components. The cameras use 3CCD professional cameras to that effect on each element are shown in green, red and blue image separated by a prism. This solution is however very expensive and is not for this use in closed circuit. Conversely, it is replaced by a device to allow a single-CCD "understand" the colors image.
To make a color CCD camera is placed a grid on the CCD filter, where each pixel represents a filter to allow passage parts only, green, red and blue.
An example Filter the grid can be seen in the photo on the side. It should be noted in the drawing that the number of green filter is twice the red and blue filters (25% blue, red 25%, green 50%) because the human eye is more sensitive to this color component.
What in the ER monochrome CCD pixel, it becomes rather a zone of the CCD in the detection of color, said quadrant, consisting of two green pixels, one red and one blue. The circuit of the camera do not mix these elements for the final color of the quadrant.
As you saw, where the CCD used a black and white pixel color CCD camera uses than 4, which explains why the cameras to the rule in black and white camera has a much higher resolution in color.
